Wake Up and Smell the Tortilla: A Zesty Breakfast Tour in Spain

General

Is there anything better than a Spanish breakfast? Picture this: a golden morning in Barcelona, where you’re greeted not by the ordinary but by a divine concoction of churros and chocolate. For those new to the fiesta, breakfast in Spain is more than just the first meal—it’s an experience woven with flavors, traditions, and a pinch of Spanish flamboyance.

Let’s kick it off in Barcelona. Ever heard of Natas Empanadas? I remember tripping over my own feet to get through their doors! Now, I won’t say I know the secret to their perfect empanadas, but I will admit to occasionally dreaming of buying their recipe. And just a street away, it’s a crime to leave without indulging in a café con leche paired with a croissant from Bracafé, its buttery flakes a whisper of Paris meeting Catalonia.

Further south, we waltz into Madrid. Spain’s capital is often buzzing with energy akin to a guitar strumming a fast flamenco. One cannot prance through the city without a pit stop at Chocolatería San Ginés. Only because their churros and thick, velvety chocolate are the stuff dreams are made of. Picture it: swirling a crispy churro so perfect, you might consider proposing to it, right before devouring it.

Turning left, heading to Seville, we plunder into a world where orange blossom fragrances fill the air, much like an invisible bakery prowling the city streets. Pan y Più is a cheeky contender here, recently winning my personal trophy for their avocado toast topped with poached eggs so luscious you’d think Salvador Dalí sculpted them. Ironic? Perhaps. Delicious? Absolutely.

Now, Salamanca whispers from afar, pleading its case for a morning jaunt. Café Novelty, celebrating over a century of caffeine-fueled gossip, serves a tortilla española so fluffy, it should be patented. Wander in and act like a local—order a café solo, sip, and gossip in rapid Spanish about absolutely nothing. Yes, perfect.
